Round and About

Chapel-le-Dale is a broad U-shaped dale that stretches from the outskirts of Ingleton, and rises up to to the Ribblehead Viaduct where it narrows into a V-shape before merging into the upper moorland of the Yorkshire Dales. The sides of the Dale are the slopes of Ingleborough on one side and Whernside on the other, with the third of the three peaks Penyghent in neighbouring Ribblesdale. The landscape is characterised by the unusual feature of limestone scars, and the traditional dry-stone walling.

The Chapel of the Fells sits in a small woodland area in the hamlet of Chapel le Dale, 50 yards from Croft Gate. It is a grade II listed building, built in the late 17th century with some 18th century additions and was painted by JMW Turner in 1806. There is a memorial here dedicated to the workers who perished during the building of the Settle to Carlisle railway, and also those who built the viaduct at Ribblehead.

This location makes it a favourite walking area, criss-crossed by many paths including the Three Peaks Walk, The Ingleton Waterfalls Trail, the Dales Highway, Dales Way and many other individual paths and rights of way.

Besides the attraction of the natural beauty visitors are drawn to the Dale for the White Scar Caves, Ingleton Waterfalls Trail and the Ribblehead Viaduct & Settle-Carlise Railway.

A short 20 minute drive takes you through stunning scenery tothe bustling market town of Hawes, at the head of Wensleydale. From here you can explore Herriot country round Askrigg, visit the falls at Aysgarth or take the Buttertubs Pass over to Muker and the famous wildflower meadows by the river Swale.

Alternatively, you can wander round the Victorian town of Kirkby Lonsdale with its many restaurants and cafes, visit the book town of Sedburgh and explore the cobbled streets of Dent.

Further afield are the popular Lake District attractions at Windermere (40 mins) and you can even watch the stunning sunsets over the sea at Morecambe Bay (40 mins).
